More On Leumeah
Discover the History of Leumeah, NSW
Leumeah, located 52 kilometers southwest of the Sydney CBD, is a vibrant suburb within the City of Campbelltown, part of the Macarthur region. The name “Leumeah” originates from the Tharawal language, meaning “Here I rest,” acknowledging both the area’s Indigenous heritage and early settler John Warby. Warby, a convict explorer transported to Sydney in 1792, was granted land in the area in 1816. He built his estate on this land, establishing a farm that stood the test of time, with remnants still visible today.
Early Beginnings
The area originally inhabited by the Tharawal people was named Leumeah, which translates to “Here I rest.” John Warby, a convict who arrived in Sydney in 1792, was granted land in 1816, where he built a house, barn, and stables. The barn is still standing and is part of the Colonial Motor Inn today. Warby befriended the Tharawal people and learned their language, contributing significantly to the early development of the area.
Development and Growth
In 1887, a railway station was established, initially named “Holly Lea” after a local politician’s property. Due to local opposition, the name was quickly changed to Leumeah. The post-WWII era saw substantial growth, with significant land subdivisions and the establishment of community amenities like schools and shopping centers. The suburb continued to develop throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and by 1969, it was officially named Leumeah.
Modern Leumeah
Today, Leumeah is known for its mix of residential, commercial, and recreational facilities. The Leumeah Shopping Centre and Wests Leagues Club are popular local hubs, offering a range of services and entertainment options. The suburb also boasts several heritage-listed sites, including the historic Holly Lea and Plough Inn, reflecting its rich past.
Community and Lifestyle
Leumeah offers a blend of suburban tranquility and modern conveniences, making it an attractive place to live. The area is well-served by public transport, with Leumeah railway station providing easy access to Sydney and surrounding regions. The community is active, with local events and sports activities centered around facilities like Campbelltown Stadium, home to the Macarthur FC.
